Why your Wix website is not generating clients (and how to fix it)

You spent hours on Wix. You chose a template, added your text, put in photos. The site has been live for 6 months, maybe a year. And client enquiries still do not come.

You are not alone. This is the story of dozens of Belgian freelancers I meet every month. And in the vast majority of cases, the problem is not that the site is "not pretty". There are precise, technical and marketing reasons.

Reason 1: Wix is penalised by Google on mobile

The code Wix generates is noticeably heavier than a custom site. In 2026, Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor — loading speed, visual stability, responsiveness.

Reason 2: Wix URLs are terrible for local SEO

By default, Wix generates URLs like /services/hairdresser-brussels-2. The "2" is a negative signal for Google. A custom site has clean URLs like /hairdresser-brussels — exactly what people type into Google.

Reason 3: your homepage talks about you, not your client

Look at your homepage. Does it start with "Welcome to the website of..." or "I am passionate about my work for X years"? These texts do not answer the visitor's question: "Can this provider solve MY problem?"

The rule: the first 5 seconds on your site must say what you do, for whom, and what result the client will get.

Reason 4: no Google My Business linked to your site

For local searches in Belgium, Google prioritises the Local Pack — the 3 businesses with a Google Maps listing. Without a linked listing, you are invisible on these searches. It takes 2 hours and is free.

Reason 5: your contact form does not actually work

Test your own form. Now. Seriously. Wix forms often have silent problems: emails landing in spam, notifications disabled by default, fields not submitting on certain mobile browsers.

Reason 6: no reason to contact you right now

"Contact me" is not a CTA. "Free quote — reply within 24h" or "Book your discovery call — 3 slots available this week" are.
