5 common mistakes that drive visitors away from your website
Your site gets traffic but nobody contacts you? These 5 silent mistakes are driving your visitors away — and every single one is fixable.
Visitors arrive but leave straight away
You've invested in a website. It's live. Maybe Google is even sending you traffic. But here's the problem: visitors arrive and leave without getting in touch.
This is called your bounce rate. And in most cases, it's caused by easily fixable mistakes. Here are the 5 we see most often with Belgian SMEs.
A site that's too slow
This is the number-one mistake, and the most expensive. 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Three seconds. That's all.
The most common causes:
- Uncompressed images (a 5 MB photo when 200 KB would do)
- Cheap hosting
- Too many unnecessary plugins or scripts
- No caching configured
Compress your images (WebP is ideal), choose quality hosting, and strip out everything non-essential. A fast site is a site that converts.
A design that doesn't build trust
Your visitor forms an opinion about your site in 0.05 seconds. It's instinctive, not rational. If the design looks "amateur", trust is gone before the content is even read.
Credibility killers:
- Mismatched or too many fonts
- Garish or inconsistent colours
- Pixelated or obviously generic stock images
- Cluttered layout
Invest in a professional, cohesive design. Two fonts maximum, a defined colour palette, quality images. Restraint builds trust.
No proper mobile version
In Belgium, over 65% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site isn't perfectly readable on a smartphone, you're losing two out of three visitors.
A "responsive" site doesn't just mean elements resize. It means:
- Text that's readable without zooming
- Buttons large enough to tap with a thumb
- Simple, intuitive navigation
- Forms that are easy to fill in on a small screen
Think mobile-first. Design for the smartphone first, then adapt for desktop. Not the other way round.
No clear call to action
Your visitor lands on your site. They read your content. And then what? If they don't know what to do next, they leave. It's that simple.
Many SME websites lack clear, visible calls to action (CTAs):
- No "Request a quote" button visible immediately
- Phone number buried in the footer
- Contact form on a separate page that's hard to find
- No incentive to act ("Get a free quote within 24 hours")
Place a primary CTA above the fold (visible without scrolling). Repeat it in several places. Make it impossible to miss.
Content that talks about you instead of the customer
This is the subtlest mistake, but also the most widespread. Many websites open with: "Founded in 2005, our company specialises in..."
The problem? Your visitor doesn't care about your history. They care about their problem.
Effective content:
- Starts with the customer's problem: "Looking for a reliable plumber in Brussels?"
- Explains how you solve that problem
- Proves it works (testimonials, past projects)
- Invites them to take action
Rewrite your opening around your customer's problem. Not your story — their need. Test it: if you could swap "we" for a competitor's name without it changing anything, it's too generic.
Your website isn't about you. It speaks to your customer, about their problem, with your solution.
Quick 5-point test: is your site healthy?
Open your site on your phone — does it load in under 3 seconds? Test on PageSpeed Insights.
Does the design inspire trust from the very first second, without knowing anything about your business?
Is everything comfortably readable and tappable on phone, without zooming or pinching?
Is there a clearly visible action button without scrolling? Is it clear what happens after clicking?
Does the first paragraph talk about the customer's problem, or your company's history?
If you answered "no" to even one of these questions, your site is costing you clients. The good news: every one of these mistakes is fixable. And the return on investment is immediate.
